The Misions of Meteorological Research and Development Center

Missions of the Center:

     The mission of the CWB Research and development Center is to support research relevant to forecasting operations.  The research covers a wide range of atmospheric sciences, such as numerical weather prediction, statistical climatology, tropical meteorology, mesoscale meteorology, and radar meteorology, etc.  Recent focus has been on the implementation of the third generation numerical weather prediction system, the improvement of typhoon and heavy rainfall forecasting techniques, and the introduction of medium- and long- range weather forecasting techniques.  Some of the research results obtained in past years are now being tested in operations.
     Over recent years, the persistence of abnormal warm sea temperatures has been observed in the eastern equatorial Pacific of South America.  These El Nino phenomena appear to have caused abnormal weather conditions, such as floods and droughts in various regions on the globe.  The CWB not only participates in the international Research Institute for Climate Prediction (IRI-CP) but also cooperates with domestic universities and research institutes to develop regional climate prediction techniques in order to provide information relevant to El Nino predictions.
     In addition, through the contracted research projects and the annual weather analysis and forecast conference, the CWB also constantly invites domestic or overseas scholars and experts as consultants to join in research subjects of common interest or to assist in solving specific problems in forecast operations.
